Los Angeles Long Beach: staff

Francesca Andrews - Centre Director and LA Regional Manager
MA TESOL; BA French Studies
My work involves:
Managing the Embassy school in LA Long Beach. My job is to make sure everything runs smoothly at the school so that our international students can have the best possible experience studying English in Southern California.
My top tip for learning:
Talk to everybody! When you are waiting for the bus, standing in line at the store, or enjoying an amusement park, strike up a pleasant conversation! Americans are very friendly and are always happy to talk about the weather, the traffic, the food they are buying or any current events. Try it! You might make a new American friend!
My top tip for enjoying life in Los Angeles:
Take advantage of every opportunity to experience something new in this world class city: movie premieres, museums, amusement parks, Lakers' games, Dodger baseball, plays, concerts, shopping! We have it all! And I know you will enjoy the beach!
My experience:
I've been an international educator for more than 15 years, including eight years overseas. Besides studying in France for two years, I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Senegal where I trained Senegalese English teachers. I also taught English in Japan for three years. When I returned to the US, I began working for campus-based intensive English programmes where I was the Academic Director and Centre Director. I love working with international students and hearing their stories!

Begum Asena - Student Services Manager
My work involves:
Helping students with everything! Course changes, activities, visa/I-20 advising, accommodation changes, general questions. I try to do everything that will make our students' experience unforgettable.
My top tip for learning:
Speak English. Make an effort. Most importantly, have fun!
My top tip for enjoying life in Los Angeles:
Enjoy the famous California beach life with your friends. Go swimming, surfing and kayaking. Fun never stops when you are in LA. There are many activities under the LA sun that make every experience memorable. No one could really get enough of Los Angeles but you should try!
My experience:
As a former international student myself, I can say that the best experience of my life was being outside my own culture and country. My experiences in the US as an international student helps me to enjoy interacting with students, and witnessing their success, even more.
