Maeko Sasanuma from Japan - Student at Embassy CES Brisbane

Maeko Sasanuma, Japan

I have been studying at Embassy CES for six months. I have got lots of friends from different countries. It was quite hard for me to understand their accents at first and also I was too shy to speak English. I always felt small in my classroom. However, my teachers encouraged me a lot all the time and I can communicate with my friends well now. I think that is a great advantage for my next career. I worked as an exporter in Japan. I had difficulty in talking with my clients who were not native English speakers on the phone. I always felt irritated and depressed because of my poor listening and speaking ability and so I avoided making phone calls. Now that I have got used to talking with my friends from all over the world, I do not hesitate to call my clients anymore!

My friends always say that I never study! That may be true. I am just enjoying my life in Australia. This is a precious year for me, so I would like to take advantage of this opportunity to the full. I would like to use my time not only for studying but enjoying myself. Needless to say studying is important, but I can study at the desk in Japan. So I would rather spend time meeting people and experiencing something new. That definitely broadens my mind. I sometimes talk about difficult topics with my friends, for example the economy, science, history and politics of our countries. My friends give me their honest opinions. I realised that complete multiple understanding between friends from different countries was almost impossible but the endeavor to understand each other was important. It makes my stay in Australia valuable that I can meet such nice people in Embassy CES!
