New York : FAQs

These are the questions we are most frequently asked about studying in New York.

If you have a question and cannot find the answer below, please contact us - we'll be happy to help, and we might even add your question to this page.

How far is the school from the city centre?

The school is in Mid-Manhattan, just a few minutes' walk from Fifth Avenue, the Empire State Building, etc. All areas of Manhattan are easily accessible from the school, by foot, taxi or subway. You'll find a map on the New York local information page.

How far are the residences / the Homestays from the school?

Please see our New York Accommodation section for full details. Homestays are a maximum of an hour away by public transport. Our main residence, the Manhattan School of Music, is a 20-25 minute subway ride away, on a direct line with no changes.

Is there internet access at the school/at the residence / in Homestay? Is it free to use?

All our schools have wireless Internet access which is free and unlimited. Students can also use the school computers for free all day, but may have to wait during busy times.

The Manhattan School of Music has an Internet access point in every room; please check details of our other student residences at the time of booking, if internet access is of primary importance to you.

Homestays differ, and we cannot guarantee Internet access. Please mention at the time of booking if it is important to you, and we will do our best to accommodate your requirements.

Are there cooking facilities in the Manhattan School of Music student residence?

Although there are no cooking facilities, students have access to the Manhattan School of Music's excellent cafeteria. Fridges and microwaves are also available for hire.

Can I see some photos of the school / the residence?

Please see our New York photo gallery and New York photobook (PDF). If you would like to see more photos, just contact us. We can email you pictures that will help you to imagine life at Embassy New York a bit more clearly.

What is a 'primary residence'?

Some of our locations have the use of more than one student residence. However, there is sometimes one residence which we prefer, usually because of how near it is to the school, its quality, its size - or a combination of all of these things. We call this our 'primary residence' and it is the one you are most likely to be offered.

Please note that other options may only be available during certain seasons. We can discuss the best residence for your needs during the enrolment process; please feel free to ask for details of all options.

Are there any staff at the school who speak my language?

Although it is not possible for us to employ staff who speak the language of every student at our New York school, we do have access to counsellors in  many languages.

In addition, we have Korean/Japanese speakers available during your first day at school and on every afternoon.

If you feel you need to communicate in your own language, and we cannot locate a counsellor, we can almost always find another student who speaks your langauage, and can help. We will always do our utmost to communicate.

Do I need a car in New York?

No. Most native New Yorkers do not run a car because driving in the city is much less convenient than taking public transport and walking. The school itself is easily accessible by public transport, and our Activities programme will take you to many surrounding places, so we'd recommend that you don't need a car.

You will find the answer to more general questions about Embassy on our main FAQs page.
