International Students' Day at Embassy Brisbane

Anne Azano, the Student Activities Co-ordinator at Embassy Brisbane, writes:
Our International Student Day was a wonderful celebration of different nationalities and cultures. Students shared their cuisine, culture, dancing and information about their countries.
Some of the culinary highlights were: coffee and dates from Saudi Arabia, Turkish Delight, Brazilian Brigadeiros and Coxina, Venezulan desserts, Japanese sushi and traditional clothing, Korean kim chi and spicy octopus, delicacies from Thailand, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and China, Vegemite sandwiches and homemade American choc chip cookies!
The displays were great, as were the performances. The entertainment consisted of Russian dancing, Turkish belly dancing, French love messages, guitar music from Colombia and a chop stick competition!
So many students participated and it was a huge success! To quote one student "It was awesome!"

Embassy Brisbane students love the Australian Football League!
On April 17th nearly 50 Embassy Brisbane students and teachers got together to watch the Brisbane Lions play the Western Bulldogs at the Brisbane Cricket Ground (also known as the Gabba). It was a great Australian experience for our students. The seats were very close to the field so everyone had a wonderful view of the action. The Lions were losing in the first half, but came back to beat the Bulldogs 101 points to 79. Students were cheering and shouting along with the rest of the crowd and even joined in to sing when the Lions won.
After the game, the group was able to enjoy the unique experience of rushing onto the field. “I love AFL,” French student Aurelie Gorge proclaimed at the end of the game. The students can’t wait for their next trip to an AFL game will take place on July 31st when the Lions play the Melbourne Demons.

New Embassy Brisbane Student Ambassador to Latin America
Embassy Brisbane is pleased to announce that Maria Pineda Amaro has been chosen as a Student Ambassador for Brisbane Marketing, supported by the Brisbane City Council.

Maria was presented with her award by The Right Honorable, Lord Mayor Councilor Campbell Newman at a prestigious ceremony held in the Mayor’s chambers.
Maria is tasked with promoting her Brisbane experience to potential international students. She will also be actively involved in leveraging a new ‘Study Brisbane’ website where she will create her own peer networks, giving Brisbane education, lifestyle and leisure, exposure across the globe.
The application involved a submission of no more than one hundred words responding to key questions about why the entrant wanted to be an ambassador, and how they would showcase the great city of Brisbane to a first time visitor.
Thousands of applications were submitted and then screened. The successful applicants were then invited to attend an interview – where Maria really impressed the judges and shone.
Only 25 students were selected to represent Brisbane in the top 25 international markets, and we are very proud of Maria and her representation of the Latin America (Brazil and Colombia) markets.
Brisbane students meet tennis number one
Noelia and Oliver (pictured above) are two students from Spain who have been studying at Embassy Brisbane. They went to the Australian Open in Melbourne where they met the world number one tennis champion Rafa Nadal before watching his victory in the final against the Swiss former world champion Roger Federer.
"We think that Nadal is amazing, incredible... he is like a man from another world because of his stamina and power", they said.
They were even lucky enough to meet and speak to the man himself during a training session: "We talked with him a little bit, so, Oliver could say thank you for the wristband that he gave to us at the end of his match, in the third round. He is very shy. He said, "Thank you", all the time and he was very pleasant and talked about this opportunity to win the Open."
