Here are some recent news stories from Embassy Brighton:

Mayor visits Embassy Brighton

The mayor visits Embassy BrightonThe mayor of Brighton and Hove, Geoff Wells and his wife Sally, visited Embassy Brighton to meet students, sample the excellent food in the cafeteria, and get a feel for the overseas student experience in the UK.

He was impressed by the high level of English of all he met and observed that our students smiled a lot and seemed determined to succeed in whatever they were doing.

At the end of his two-hour visit, he extended an invitation for two groups of students to visit him in the New Year in his parlour in the Town Hall, where they can see how the local political system operates, visit the police museum and meet officials and elected representatives of the city.

The students were surprised that the mayor was 'an ordinary person' and they did not have to treat him in any particular way.

Carol-singing at Embassy Brighton

It was an opportunity to fill the school with beautiful music, and raise some money for the company's charity too - staff put on their Santa hats and sang carols.

Embassy Football Cup

The Embassy Football Cup kicked off at 10am on Saturday 25th April in nearby Preston Park, a short walk from the Brighton Study Centre.

Twelve teams played five-a-side football matches all with the common aim of having a lot of fun and scoring as many goals as possible.

The teams were all made up of students from Embassy Brighton and sister school Bellerbys College. Different countries were united in sharing the same feelings: passion for playing football and wining this cup.

Team "Ragazzi" (pictured) were the victorious winners.

Students enjoy International Cultural Evening

On March 18, The Brighton Study Centre was host of its second International Cultural Evening. The evening gives students the opportunity to share, experience and enjoy each others' cultural traditions.

The attendance was phenomenal with over 300 students enjoying the demonsration stands which were represented by twelve different countries such as Kazakhstan, Turkey, Colombia, Mongolia, China, Iran, Nigeria and many more.

Stands featured instruments, postcards, books, posters, different types of tea, food delicacies and some students even wore national-styles of dresss.

Fi Orando and Tati Pava, the party organisers, were delighted to see such a fantastic turn-out and have some fantastic photos taken by the students which go to show what a great time everyone had at the event.

Guest of honour was the Mayor of Brighton (whose full title, The Right Worshipful the Mayor of the City of Brighton & Hove, Councillor Carol Theobald, is something of a mouthful!). Also in attendance was Lord Tomlinson, Chairman of the Association of Independent Higher Education Providers, and member of the House of Lords. Other guests included staff from all departments of Embassy's parent company, Study Group, including teachers, administration staff, and directors. Naturally, students were invited too.

Chinese dragon dance at opening ceremony of Embassy CES Brighton

Above: Guests watch the Chinese Dragon dance with admiration.

The event began with tours of the building, showing off its special features and facilities, from the fully-equipped classrooms to the flagship central atrium.

Four students were invited to unveil the plaque to celebrate the event. After this ceremony, drinks and canapes were served, while the guests were entertained by a Chinese dragon dance (it was, coincidentally, Chinese New Year just a few days before - and the dance also allowed us to celebrate this with our Chinese students).

Then it was time to showcase the many abilities of our talented students and staff. Brian Lin Ka Shing and Joy Yi Zhao played Beethoven sonatas on the piano; teacher Derek McAleese played classical Spanish pieces on the guitar; Assa, from Kazakhstan - and once a member of the Kazakh National Dance Troupe - performed the Kazakh national dance; and the college rock band (who are so new they do not yet have a name!) also played. In short, it was a marvellous example of a truly multi-cultural celebration - very fitting, given the atmosphere of our international school.
