Phil Hanie - CELTA, BIE
Teacher
I've always had a natural interest in teaching and in words, and it was meeting an English teacher in Barcelona that brought me to this job. After working as a Systems Analyst, a Financial Analyst for a major telecommunications company, and on a Swedish cruise ship, travelling around the world, I turned to teaching English. I've been here at Embassy CES since 1997.
My job involves teaching all the skills needed to communicate in English (listening, speaking, reading and writing), but also keeping students interested in class. I love to see students improving, and learning about their cultures. Getting a positive response to my teaching is always a pleasure, too.
In my free time, I play tennis and ski; I also work out regularly in a gym, and I really enjoy travelling (mostly in Europe). I'm a fan of American college football, and one of my favourite memories of my time here is of escorting a group of students from Europe, Asia and South America to watch a game.
Fort Lauderdale is laid-back and the weather is great. If you're planning to come here, I recommend the rodeo, the Greek Festival in February, Christmas on Las Olas Boulevard (where our school is situated) and the Boat Parade in December, the Air and Sea Show in May.
