Embassy USA Student of the Year Award

Embassy New York - USA Student of the Year Tleuzhan AlibayevEvery year, Embassy in the USA gives out a Student of the Year Award. This award is given to a student who has not only excelled in their chosen course, but who has also worked hard and integrated themselves into the Embassy student community.

This year’s winner of the Embassy USA Student of the Year Award is Tleuzhan Alibayev from Kazakhstan (pictured left). Tleuzhan studied at the Embassy New York centre, and he is very glad that he chose to study in this world-famous city: ‘New York is the hot spot of the world. Everyone dreams of coming to New York. I realised my dream and I’ll never forget it’.

Tleuzhan studied the Embassy Diploma course which is designed to help students gain the English skills and knowledge required to progress onto a university course. Also, he was part of the initial trialing of Embassy’s Smart Express technology. The Smart Express course provides students with exclusive e-learning resources and access to the latest technology in class so that they can learn and improve their English skills as much as possible.

In Kazakhstan, Tleuzhan already works as a lawyer and he plans to use his new English skills, to pursue a Masters of Law degree in the USA.

Congratulations to Tleuzhan and the Embassy New York team!

New blogger for New York

Bruna Calheiros

We are more delighted than we can say to have one of MTV Brazil's most engaging presenters as a student at Embassy New York. And as if that wasn't enough, she's permitting us to share her blog posts!

Bruna Calheiros has joined the Embassy Smart Express course, and will be blogging about her experiences all the way.

She writes in Portuguese, but for those who do not speak the language, you can read her posts in English, thanks to Google Translate. Machine translation is not perfect, but it will give you a very good basic understanding. Or, read her Portuguese posts here.

On her personal blog Smelly Cat, Bruna paints an appealing picture of herself:

"This Sao Paulo shorty will not pass a good chocolate by, even though sometimes the bars are twice her size.

Loves movies and will never miss a chance to take up residence on her neighbour's couch munching as much popcorn as possible.

Stubborn, tends to speak her mind and has already gained some bruises from it. Pretends not to read horoscopes, but does not leave home without knowing what the day holds for Scorpios.

Fanatical about cartoons, wants a SpongeBob tattoo on the sole of her foot, but is afraid of tickles. She loves to travel and wants to decorate her house like a hotel, but with free room service."

Now you know all about Bruna, go ahead and read her posts!

Embassy New York: renovated and looking good

Embassy New York study centre

Embassy New York is looking great after a major renovation costing $1.3 million.

The New York school, located in central Manhattan, has completed improvements on floor six. Floor five is due for completion in June 2009. The school is one of Embassy's busiest: the new environment will be enjoyed by hundreds of students over the coming months.

The walls are decorated in energising orange. There are newly laid wooden floors and carpets throughout, with new seating in all study lounges and classrooms. Students and staff have commented on the "stylish" and "cool" design and how the new glass wall panels give the classrooms such a light and spacious feel.

Students also benefit from the latest teaching innovations, such as interactive whiteboards in all classrooms, allowing for greater interactivity in class. There is also a newly resourced computer centre.

See more pictures of the refurbished school on the Embassy New York photo page. Now would be a great time to book your course in New York and be among the first to benefit from this wonderful new environment.

My Internship

Here is recent news from Sae Na Park, a South Korean sudent at Embassy New York:

As a result of studying at Embassy New York, I had the opportunity to participate in an internship at Flower Publishing. I did not know what to expect, what I would be doing, or who I would be working with. At Flower Publishing, I learned interesting and valuable information as well as skills that will be useful to me in the future. I learned about the process of advertising, which will be useful to me since I plan to work in the advertising field.

Also, I learned about how to get along in a work environment, which will be useful in any job. I always felt that I was accomplishing something and that was quite satisfying. Another positive outcome from my internship at Flower Publishing is I could meet a lot of native speakers from diverse situations. One day, my supervisor gave me a small mission which was to report about a shop for the next month's advertising. First, I visited the shop and met the owner of the salon and interviewed her to get information. Finally, I took many pictures of the shop to publish in the issue. I felt like real reporter and I did the project by myself from start to finish.

As well as learning things related to publishing a guide, this internship gave me the opportunity to learn a thing or two about myself. I became far more aware of my interests in this field and after the initial fear of incompetence, I actually became more self-confident. As I mentioned, I’d never been challenged like this before. I had no idea that I'd be able to learn so much in such a short time. As the kind of person who seeks challenges, this has definitely been something I have enjoyed immensely. Never once was I able to become bored -I loved it! I'd like to thank Flower Publishing, Peter, Mauricio, Jasmine, Somah, Stephanie, and especially Embassy. This internship has certainly been something I will never forget.
