FAQs

These are the questions we are most frequently asked about Embassy.

If you have a question and cannot find the answer below, please contact us - we'll be happy to help, and we might even add your question to this page.

Contact

I want to know more about a course, a school, or accommodation.

If you have a question and cannot find the answer on this website, please contact us. We will be happy to respond and there is no obligation to buy.

Where can I find the address / phone number of a specific school / accommodation?

The address of our schools can be found on the 'local information' page of each school's section.

Click on the marker on the Google map on that page, to bring up a speech bubble containing the address.

For the address of our accommodation, please contact us. Our accommodation varies from season to season, and it is currently impractical to keep the addresses up-to-date online.

We do not publish phone numbers for our schools. If you have a message for a specific school, please contact us and we will pass it on. If you have a general question about a school's facilities or courses, etc, you should also use our contact form.

I want to contact a current Embassy student.

If your message is urgent, please contact us via our contact form or phone number, and we will pass your message on.

You can also send a letter by post to the student's school. Student Services can receive letters and parcels for all current students. See the question above for details of where to find the schools' addresses.

I want to contact a past Embassy student.

We are sorry, but because of Data Protection law, we are unable to give out contact details for past students. You may have some success posting a message on our Embassy Facebook pages:

You have to be a Facebook member: it is free and quick to join.
Once in, just click on 'become a fan' at the top right of the Facebook page.

I want to contact a teacher I had at Embassy.

The best thing to do is to send a written letter to the address given on the school's page (see the question "Where can I find the address/phone number of a specific school/accommodation?" above), but if you prefer, you can use our contact form and we will forward your message to the relevant school.

Of course, teachers sometimes move on, so unfortunately we cannot guarantee that your message will reach them.

I want to work for Embassy.

Please see our Work for Embassy section.

I am trying to use your application form or contact form but it keeps crashing.

Our apologies! We do our best to ensure that this does not happen, but we know that sometimes errors can occur. You may wish to try a different browser to see if that helps. If not, please contact us by phone or fax:

Studying with Embassy

Where do Embassy students come from?

Literally, from all around the world. When you study with Embassy, you can be sure of meeting and making friends with people from many different nations: we have been delighted to welcome students from more than 50 countries to our schools.

We try to ensure a good mix of nationalities in each of our classes. That means that there's less temptation to speak your own language!

On the other hand, if your English isn't too good, and you're worried about communicating, relax. Our centres employ counsellors of many nationalities in case of emergencies or problems. And all our staff have many years of experience in looking after students and understanding even those with a low level of English. We will keep you safe.

Is my English good enough to study at Embassy?

Embassy has an English for Beginners course for students who have no English at all. Our qualified and experienced teachers know the special requirements of beginners, and the support they require. You really can start from zero .

On arrival at the school, you will be given an entrance test to ascertain your level. If you have studied a little English, even if it was a long time ago, you are more likely to be placed in an Elementary class. These classes are run at all our schools.

For a description of the levels we use at Embassy, please see our Levels page. You may also wish to take our English test (on the homepage) for an idea of your basic capabilities. We have classes at every level, right up to Advanced.

How long do I need to study for?

That depends entirely on your aims.

On average, we reckon that approximately ten weeks of Intensive study will raise your English by one level. See the progress chart on the Embassy Promise page for more details; for an explanation of different levels, see our Levels page.

Maybe you cannot spare ten whole weeks, though. It doesn't matter. Bear in mind that any time spent in an Anglophone country will kickstart your learning, and reignite your interest in studying when you return home. Even a short course will boost your vocabulary, fluency and confidence.

What is my level of English?

See our English levels page for a full explanation of English levels, and equivalent IELTS, TOEIC and TOEFL scores. Please take our online English test on the homepage for a rough idea of your level. There are five sections and each section is roughly equivalent to one level (Elementary to Advanced).

Or why not contact us? We are happy to advise you on the best course for your needs, with no obligation.

There is no need to worry about your level, however. All students are tested on the first day at Embassy, and placed in the class most suitable for their level of fluency and knowledge of grammar. Your teacher will assess your progress regularly and movements between classes will be made in consultation with him or her.

Who will decide which level class I join?

On arrival at any of our centres, you will be given a written test and a brief interview with a teacher or one of the academic staff. This will decide the best class for you to be placed in.

See our English levels page for a full explanation of English levels, and equivalent IELTS, TOEIC and TOEFL scores.

Will I stay in that class for my whole time at Embassy?

That depends on the length of your stay, and the progress you make. Students who make good progress will, in consultation with their teacher, be moved to a higher level.

So you might begin as an Elementary student and leave as an Advanced one.

Are books and materials provided by Embassy, or will I have to pay for my own?

Course books and supplementary materials are provided by the school on all courses except Diploma courses and the Pre-Masters course. Students on these courses are advised to budget approximately US $100 (GB £50, AUS $104) for books.

You may wish to purchase additional supporting books, although they are not essential.

Booking

Do I need a visa?

Visa information changes frequently and differs according to your nationality, destination, and the purpose of your visit. Please see our visas page for further information.

For specific questions, why not contact us? We are happy to help as best we can, although the most up-to-date information will come from your destination country's embassy. Our Enrolment Advisors have plenty of experience and can guide you in your application.

If I cancel the course or leave early, am I eligible for a refund?

Please see the cancellation and withdrawal sections of our terms and conditions.

I want to see more pictures of the school / location / accommodation.

Please contact us. We have many more images than we can realistically publish on the website, and in many cases our Enrolment Advisors have also visited the schools ourselves and can answer specific questions.

The option I want to book is not on your application form.

Sorry! Not every option is bookable online. This especially applies to courses such as English Plus, where other colleges and institutions need to confirm dates and prices before we can confirm your booking.

However, please use the application form, mentioning your preferred course in the 'comments' box, and we can counsel you through the application and ensure you get the precise package you want.

My English is not very good. How can I book?

Between them, our Enrolment Advisors can speak English, and 15 other languages. If your language is not one of them, do not worry. We will do our best to understand you. We are used to talking to people in very basic English, and can usually find a way to communicate!

I made an enquiry but have not yet received a reply. Why?

Your enquiry should trigger an automatic email within a few minutes (longer when our server is busy). If this has not happened, please check your spam folder.

There is no need to reply to this automatic email. An adviser will contact you as soon as possible – normally within 48 hours, although possibly longer during peak times and on public holidays.

If your enquiry is urgent, you may wish to contact us by phone during UK working hours.

You can call us at our head office in England on +44 1273 339 400 (normal international charges apply). Our working hours are 09.00 to 17.30, GMT.

What time is it in England?

I made an enquiry and received a reply, but it doesn't answer my question.

When you ask a question or make a booking via our forms, first you will receive an automatic reply (as described in the question "I made an enquiry but have not yet received a reply. Why?", above).

Within 48 hours, an advisor will contact you by email. If you do not receive this email, and have checked your spam filter, please contact us again, via our contact form or by phone.

You can call us at our head office in England on +44 1273 339 400 (normal international charges apply). Our working hours are 09.00 to 17.30, GMT.
